The Municipal Highway Commission of Oaxaca continues with the implementation of “Uno por Uno, Primero el Peatón”, which is enabled in downtown streets and the Reforma colony. The English translation is “One by One, Pedestrians First” as the program slogan.
The head of the department, Felipe Reyna Romero, said that to date 25 intersections have been established in streets such as Hidalgo and Manuel Doblado, Reforma and Berriozábal, Amapolas and Eucaliptos, among others. The program removed traffic signals at intersections and creates a 4-way stop system and giving pedestrians the right of way.
The program is aimed at favoring, regulating, streamlining and improving roads in the city; avoid environmental and auditory pollution; position the pedestrian at the top of the hierarchy of the mobility pyramid and increase social coexistence.
“This initiative consists in taking the step Uno por Uno, that is, vehicle by vehicle; only in this way we will be better flowed in the road,” said Reyna Romero. At the same time, the program seeks to slow down motorists to avoid accidents. Four additional points of the city are already analyzed for consideration to implement this program.
To strengthen this type of actions and promote a positive road culture, the Police Station continues with the implementation of the “Taxi Seguro” workshop, aimed at operators of the public transport service known as yellow taxis.
400 drivers have taken the training, in which they are provided with basic knowledge for proper defensive driving; first aid; In addition, drivers have the ability to intuit and react to a situation of risk, but mainly on respect and yielding to pedestrians.
