Heavy rains in Oaxaca cause bridge collapse isolating 2,000 people

At least two thousand people from three localities are isolated due to a bridge that collapsed in the municipality of San Lorenzo Victoria, Mixteca region of Oaxaca, because of heavy rains that occurred early Thursday.

The State Coordination of Civil Protection announced that this bridge, called “Del Arroyo”, connects the municipality with the communities of San Jorge Nuchita, Santiago Yucuyachi, and Santiago Tamazola.

He said authorities are working to provide assistance to the population of San Lorenzo Victoria, belonging to the district of Silacayoapam.

The collapse of the bridge happened in the early mornings of Thursday, a consequence of the strong current that carries the river, caused by the rains in that area.

The municipal president of the community, Miguel Jerónimo Salazar Tapia, established contact with the community and ruled out further damage to the population.

Through the Mixteca delegation of Civil Protection, food and potable water will be moved to supply the population, while the department of Roads and Airports of Oaxaca (CAO) will carry out the inspection to establish works in order to reestablish the communication of this community.
