Governor Alejandro Murat Hinojosa announced that this year they will begin construction of a new Cultural Center of Oaxaca, an infrastructure project that will include an auditorium, museum and a cinema, which will require an investment of 500 million pesos. The project is currently in competition with five architects of Mexico. He also noted that the cultural infrastructure projects include a funicular to connect the center of the capital with Monte Albán.
During the presentation at the Oaxaca International Book Fair 2018, the governor announced that the cultural center will be held in the space that housed the Álvaro Carrillo theater, across from Tecnológico Nacional de México. Funding for the project will be obtained through equal contributions of $250 million pesos between the State Government and Banobras, the national bank that funds public works in Mexico.
“We are in the competition stage, five Mexican architects are participating, there will be a qualifying jury, with the most respected people at the Oaxaca level and at the national level. The new center will have an audience of performing arts and other vocations, an Imax cinema, and a museum. We are thinking that it will be named after a great Oaxacan painter, but that will have to be determined soon,” he said.
He also stressed that the funicular, cable car, “will connect, without touching the historic heritage area of Oaxaca, the Historic Center of Oaxaca with Monte Albán”.
