Five die after shootout at Mexico City’s Garibaldi Plaza

Garibaldi square is one of the main attractions of the capital of Mexico and has always attracted a lot of couples who come here to listen to the serenades performed by a Mariachi .

A shootout at a Mexico City plaza famed for its live music bars left three men and two women dead, officials said on Saturday.

Police are questioning two people after a group of men in mariachi outfits opened fire at a Mexico City restaurant, killing five people, an official with the city’s Secretary of Public Security Office told CNN on Sunday. They were still on the run as of Saturday night, and it was unclear if either of the people being questioned was a suspect in the shooting.

The Mexico City prosecutors’ office said at least one foreigner was among those wounded in Friday night’s attack, which local media said was staged by three gunmen.

"We could hear more shots, and yells from people outside who were running in fear", he said.

Mexican news outlet La Silla Rota circulated surveillance video of the alleged assailants wearing traditional embroidered jackets and trousers as they fled on motorcycles.

The five assailants opened fire with rifles and handguns shortly before 10:00 pm Friday (0300 GMT Saturday) as the downtown plaza was filled with partiers enjoying the September 16 Independence Day weekend celebrations.

It is also the busiest time of year for Plaza Garibaldi, a beloved but seedy square that draws heavily on Mexican folklore.
